White River Junction is the birthplace of railroads in Vermont and the rail center of northern New England. The junction became famous June 26, 1848 when the first railroad train in Vermont traveled between White River Junction and Bethel, Vermont. The following January, the road was finished south to Windsor, Vermont, and met by the Boston & Maine Railroad to complete the connection to Boston, Massachusetts.

By 1878, the Village had an eight-track crossing and railroads with as many as fifty passenger trains stopping in White River Junction daily.

As the future home of the Vermont Railroad Museum, White River Junction will return to its glory as the most important railroad junction in northern New England.
